The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment is a Polish astronomy project, based at the University of Warsaw, which runs a long-term variability sky survey. Its main scientific goals are to search for extrasolar planets, study dark matter with microlensing phenomena, explore galactic structure, and analyze the time-scale variability of hundreds of millions of regularly observed objects. Since 1992, it has discovered a multitude of extrasolar planets.

Tatra Mountains – first base camp before a peak in the Himalayas
“It was a complex paradox as the situation in Poland was quite bad, but alpinism was doing very well.”
Jerzy Kukuczka
Jerzy Kukucza is widely considered one of the best high-altitude climbers in history. In 1987, he became the second person to conquer the crown of the Himalayas. He also created the "Polish Line" route on K2, which has never been repeated.
Phenomenal Polish Himalayism
In the 1980s and '90s, Polish mountain climbers dominated the Himalayan scene. They scaled some of the world's most difficult peaks and challenged the limits of possibility, distinguished by an original style of climbing. Andrzej Zawada, Jerzy Kukuczka, Krzysztof Wielecki, Wojciech Kurtyka, and Wanda Rutkiewicz — they all honed their skills in Poland's Tatra mountains.
Wanda Rutkiewicz
“Wanda is the living proof that women can put up performances at high altitude that most men can only dream of.” That's what Reinhold Messner, arguably the greatest mountaineer in history, said about Wanda Rutkiewicz. She was the first woman to reach the summit of K2, and the third woman (and first European woman) to climb Mount Everest.
Under protection
The Tatra National Park is located in the Tatra Mountains in southern central Poland. It is home to endangered and endemic wildlife species. Some of the most popular species include the brown bear, Eurasian lynx, and European otter. The earliest calls for the protection of the Tatras came at the end of the 19th century.
A new generation
Andrzej Bargiel was born on April 18, 1988 in Łętownia, near Jordanów. He is the ninth of 11 children of Maria and Józef Bargiel. "Energy has been bursting within me since my childhood. No one was able to manage me — neither teachers, nor parents, who unsuccessfully tried to direct my energy to work in the backyard or household." In 2018, he made the first solo descent of K2.

The Story of Wanda Rutkiewicz
Wanda Rutkiewicz is one of the most memorable female climbers, the first European to climb Mount Everest, the first woman ever to climb K2, and the only female climber of her time who could challenge men and prove to them women were equal.
However, underneath all this success there was loneliness, dejection, and desperate efforts to build a normal life outside of 8000-metre-high peaks…
Witness the beauty of the last primeval forest in Europe
Bison
The king of Polish fauna. An adult bull weighs up to 900 kilograms, and its height at withers can reach 180 centimeters. Hunted to near-extinction in the early 20th century, bison were later reintroduced from captivity. Today, the largest bison herd found in the forest includes more than 700 of these amazing animals.
"Maciek" the Oak
This is the largest oak in Białowieża National Park. It also boasts the largest circumference of all the forest's trees. "Maciek" measures in at 40.8 meters high.
Red Deer
Red deer are most exciting to watch in the autumn when the rut begins. The rut is a contest between sexually mature deer. They fight for access to a harem of fertile females. First, they fight vocally. If this is not enough to ward off a competitor, rivals parallel-walk before locking antlers.
Lynx
The lynx is a lonely predator. It hunts ungulates, such as deer. Lynx can even hunt moose. This may come surprise,e as its weight is comparable to that of a roe deer.
Wolves
The population on the Polish side of the forest numbers 20-40 wolves, and is stable. Wolves generally don’t pose a danger to humans. Maybe you've tried to spot them? Your best chance of seeing a wolf is at dawn or dusk.
